How Does Carvana Make Money Selling Used Cars?
Carvana makes money three ways: it sells used cars online at a profit per car, it earns on the financing and add-on products it arranges at the sale, and it sells the cars it does not retail at wholesale.
- In its second quarter of 2026 it sold a record 197,325 cars (up 38%), with revenue of $7.38 billion (up 52%), net income of $513 million and adjusted EBITDA of $769 million, a 10.4% margin.
- The catch: the margin is lower than the 12.4% of a year earlier, and the stock is 40% below its 52-week high.

How does Carvana earn money on each car?
| Source of profit | How it works | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Retail sales | Carvana buys a used car, reconditions it and sells it online, delivered or collected at a vending-style tower | The margin per car is the core driver, and volume spreads fixed costs |
| Financing | It arranges the loan for most buyers and earns on it, including by selling loans to investors | A large part of profit per car comes from finance, not the car |
| Protection plans and add-ons | It sells vehicle service contracts and other products at the point of sale | High-margin extras on top of the car |
| Wholesale | Trade-ins and cars it will not retail go to auction or to dealers | Cars bought from consumers (the supply) and a second sales line |
Carvana's total gross profit per unit (GPU), the profit on each car after the cost of the car and its reconditioning, was reported as $6,783 in the first quarter of 2026, down $155 from a year earlier. The company reports retail, wholesale and other GPU separately in its shareholder letter, which could not be read here, so check it for the Q2 split.

Carvana's second-quarter revenue, from its July 29, 2026 results release.
The release says that at its current run rate, almost 800,000 retail units a year, Carvana is still only about 1.5% of the US automotive market. That is the growth argument. The margin fall is the cost of it: adjusted EBITDA rose by $168 million while the margin dropped two points.
What are the risks?
- Margin per car: if growth needs lower prices or higher costs, margins can keep falling, as they did from 12.4% to 10.4%.
- Credit: financing income depends on buyers repaying and on investors buying the loans, so a weaker credit market would hurt.
- Volatility: the stock's beta is about 3.7, so it moves far more than the market, and the guidance depends on the environment staying stable.
- Valuation: at 40.6 times earnings the price already assumes years of growth, and this site's reverse DCF says free cash flow per share would need to grow faster than 40% a year before fading.
