Is Caterpillar Now an AI Data Center Stock?
Partly. Caterpillar's power generation sales, which include the engines and turbines used for data centers, were $3.1 billion of its $20.5 billion second-quarter sales, about 15%, but they grew 29% and drove a record backlog of about $72 billion, with some customers ordering through 2030.
- Most of the company is still construction and mining machinery, which grew faster in the quarter (construction up 35%, resource up 20%).
- The stock traded like an AI play, rising more than 90% in a year to about $815 in September, and sold off like one, to $687 on October 23.

How much of Caterpillar is power generation?
| Segment (Q2 2026) | Sales | Growth | Segment profit margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction Industries | $8.35 billion | +35% | 23.3% |
| Power & Energy | $8.24 billion | +17% | 24.6% |
| Resource Industries (mining, quarry, rail) | $4.65 billion | +20% | 14.9% |
| Financial Products | $0.96 billion | +7% | n/a |
| Total sales and revenues | $20.5 billion | +24% | Adjusted operating margin 21.9% |
Caterpillar's Power & Energy sales by application in Q2 2026 (power generation +29%, oil and gas +9%, industrial +9%), from its August 4, 2026 release.
Power generation is the fastest-growing piece, up 29% to $3.1 billion, and the release credits large reciprocating engines and turbines, primarily for data center applications. It is about 15% of total sales, so Caterpillar is a machinery company with an AI-driven growth engine, not an AI company.
What does the backlog say?
- Size: a record of about $72 billion, up about $9.4 billion from the first quarter and up 92% on the year.
- Timing: about 59% should ship within 12 months, and some customers are ordering through 2030.
- Capacity: Caterpillar is restarting a 10-megawatt gas engine platform, about 1.5 gigawatts of capacity, with shipments before the end of 2026. The CEO said it is not a demand issue, just how fast production can rise.
- Retail demand: retail sales of power generation equipment were reported up 72% in the quarter.
A backlog turns uncertain demand into scheduled revenue, but it is still only orders. Delivery speed, customer financing and the pace of data center building decide how much becomes sales.
Why did the stock fall if demand is so strong?
Caterpillar closed at $687 on October 23, 35% below its 52-week high of $1073.46, with an RSI of 26.8, which is oversold. Coverage of the October drops points to several causes rather than one: price-target cuts by Truist and Citi, questions about how long data center power spending can last, higher rates and diesel costs, and a Baird downgrade in July over emerging regulatory concerns about data center construction. One report framed it as the data center power premium unwinding, after a rally that had taken the stock up more than 50% for the year.
Third-quarter results are expected on October 29 (one source said early November). Analysts expect revenue growth near 17% and EPS near $7.03, so the report will show whether the backlog is converting.
What are the risks?
| Risk | What is known |
|---|---|
| Data center durability | Demand depends on AI spending staying high, and power-premium multiples can fall quickly if it slows |
| Cyclical core | Construction and mining machinery still make up most sales and follow the economy |
| Tariffs | Q2 included $392 million of expected tariff recoveries, a benefit that will not repeat, and tariff costs remain a concern |
| Capacity | Revenue depends on how fast new production comes online |
| Valuation | 29.1 times trailing earnings against a long record as a cyclical |
How does CAT look on this site's checks?
From the weekly data of October 23, 2026, on the Caterpillar stock page:
| Measure | CAT | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $687.00 | 35% below its 52-week high of $1073.46 |
| Market value | $315.4 billion | Total value of all shares |
| Trailing / forward P/E | 29.1 / 26.0 | Price per dollar of earnings, last year and expected |
| Price to sales / price to book | 4.2 / 16.3 | This site's limits are 7 and 8 |
| Revenue growth / net margin | +18.4% / 14.5% | Trailing twelve months |
| Dividend yield | 0.89% | Payout ratio 26% of earnings |
| Debt to equity | 2.33 | Total debt against shareholders' equity |
| 1-year change / RSI | +33.7% / 26.8 | RSI below 30 is oversold, above 70 is overbought |
| Value filters passed | 4 of 8 | This site's eight mechanical value filters |
| Margin of safety (DCF) | -105.4% | A neutral model that fades growth from 8% to 2.5% |
The reverse DCF says the price needs free cash flow per share to grow about 27% a year, fading to 2.5%, so growth is expected to continue for years. What does RSI below 30 mean explains why an oversold reading is not a signal by itself.

Caterpillar FAQ
Is Caterpillar an AI stock?
Partly. Power generation, driven by data centers, is about 15% of sales but the fastest-growing segment and the source of a record $72 billion backlog. Most of the company is still construction and mining equipment.
Why is Caterpillar's backlog so high?
Customers building data centers are ordering large generator sets and turbines, some through 2030, and capacity is the constraint.
Why did Caterpillar stock drop?
Analysts cut price targets, investors questioned how long data center power spending can last, and a Baird downgrade in July cited regulatory concerns. The stock is about 35% below its high.
When does Caterpillar report earnings?
Third-quarter results are expected on October 29, 2026, according to Motley Fool, though one source says early November.
Is Caterpillar a cyclical stock?
Yes. Construction and mining machinery follow the economy, which is why the data center business matters, but it is still only part of the company.
