How to Find Safe High-Dividend Stocks
A safe high dividend is one the business can pay out of cash it actually generates. Run six checks: payout against free cash flow, negative free cash flow, payout against earnings, leverage, interest coverage and shrinking revenue. Of the 242 dividend payers this site tracks, 145 fail none, 80 fail one and only 3 fail three or more, the line for a yield trap. Higher yields carry more flags, so the checks matter most at the top of the yield range.
What are the six checks for a safe dividend?
| Check | Trap signal |
|---|---|
| 1. Cash-flow payout | Dividend per share above free cash flow per share |
| 2. Negative free cash flow | Paying a dividend while free cash flow is zero or negative |
| 3. Earnings payout | Dividends above 100% of trailing net income |
| 4. Leverage | Debt to equity above 2.0 and above 1.5 times its sector's median |
| 5. Interest coverage | Below 3 times and below 0.7 times its sector's median |
| 6. Revenue | Falling more than 5% year on year |
Each is written out in how this site checks whether a dividend is safe. The first is the payout ratio on cash, which how to calculate the dividend payout ratio explains.
How many dividend payers fail the checks?
The 242 dividend payers this site tracks, by how many of the six checks they fail. Three or more is the yield-trap line.
Zero or one flag puts a stock on the sustainable list (225 stocks); three or more puts it on the yield-trap list (3).
Do higher yields mean more risk?
Yes, in this data. The share of payers with two or more flags rises with the yield:
| Dividend yield | Payers | Share with 2+ flags | Share with no flags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 2% | 123 | 2% | 76% |
| 2% to 4% | 82 | 7% | 46% |
| 4% to 6% | 27 | 22% | 37% |
| 6% and over | 10 | 20% | 30% |
A falling price pushes a yield up, which is why a spiking yield is often a warning. Look at the Sustainable Dividend Screener for the current lists, and the dividend calculator guide for what a yield turns into over time.
What the checks cannot tell you
Free data does not include each payment, so a one-off special dividend can inflate a yield without being detected, and six checks cannot predict a cut. A flag can be temporary, and a clean result is not a recommendation to hold. Read the filings before deciding.
Safe dividend FAQ
What is a safe dividend yield?
There is no single level. A yield is safe when the company pays it from free cash flow it generates, with manageable debt. The higher the yield, the more important it is to check the cash behind it.
What is a yield trap?
A stock whose high yield exists because the price has fallen faster than the dividend, usually because the market expects a cut. On this site it means three or more of the six checks fail.
Is the payout ratio enough to judge a dividend?
No. A payout on earnings can look fine while cash flow is weak, which is why the cash-flow payout and leverage checks matter. The checks together give a fuller picture.
Do REITs and utilities pass these checks?
They can be checked, but the earnings payout is REIT-aware because REITs are measured on funds from operations. Their high payouts are normal and are read differently from an industrial company's.
Where can I see the safest dividend stocks?
The Sustainable Dividend Screener lists the sustainable high yielders and the yield traps, each with the checks it failed.
