Why Memory and Storage Stocks Fell From Their Highs

Memory and storage stocks are in a classic boom-and-wobble: up 136% to 742% over the past year, yet 38% to 54% below their highs after a run of sell-offs in October. Reports link the falls to Toshiba's plan to double hard-disk output, a Chinese memory maker's progress, and plain valuation after a huge run, while demand indicators remain strong.

  • A $10,000 stake in SanDisk a year ago would be about $84,200 today but was about $158,900 at the peak.
  • The key risk for cyclical chip stocks is that trailing cash flow is at a peak, so cheap-looking ratios can mislead.

How far have memory and storage stocks fallen from their highs?

+742%

SanDisk's one-year gain, which turns $10,000 into about $84,200 today after peaking near $158,900. The stock is 47% below its 52-week high.

The peak values are derived from each stock's one-year return and its distance from the high, so they show the shape of the round trip, not a tradable result. Micron, covered in will Micron keep growing?, is up 342% over the year and 28% off its high.

What triggered the October 2026 sell-off?

DateWhat happenedReported move
October 2Toshiba moves to double hard-disk output, raising supply fears for drive makersSeagate down 10%, Western Digital down 7%
October 6The Toshiba expansion keeps hitting the groupWestern Digital down 6%, Seagate down 8%
October 12Fears over a Chinese memory maker's DRAM progressSanDisk down 6%, Seagate down 4%
October 22Memory sell-off deepens ahead of earningsSanDisk down 8% to about $1,262, Western Digital down 7% to about $352, Micron down 6%

Morgan Stanley noted Western Digital had fallen about 21% and Seagate about 25% in a month, which it tied to concerns over AI spending and the durability of storage demand. Other coverage called it a classic "sell the news" reaction in which solid results fell short of very high expectations. Sources disagree on the main cause, and one analysis argued the demand indicators remain strong. SanDisk was still up about 429% for the year on October 22.

Are memory stocks expensive or cheap now?

StockTrailing / forward P/EFree cash flow yieldGrowth the price impliesWall Street view
SNDK15.9 / 8.46.3%+6.2%Buy, 4.18 of 5
WDC13.3 / 19.93.2%+23.3%Buy, 4.00 of 5
STX45.0 / 22.42.2%+34.0%Buy, 4.10 of 5
MU11.8 / 6.55.9%+7.8%Buy, 4.25 of 5

The ratios look reasonable: Micron and SanDisk trade on free-cash-flow yields near 6% to 6% of trailing cash flow, and their reverse DCFs ask for only single-digit growth. The catch is that memory is a cyclical business and that cash flow was earned at boom-time prices, so the same shares can look cheap at the peak of a cycle and expensive after it. Western Digital (price implies +23% a year) and Seagate (+34%) are the ones whose prices already ask for a lot more growth than their trailing cash flow.

Intel is in the same table because it rose with the same AI-hardware boom, but its driver is different: a foundry turnaround that has yet to show external customers. Susquehanna cut its target to $105 from $115 on October 21 and kept a Neutral rating.

How can you tell a boom from a bubble?

  • Check where in the cycle the cash flow is. A 6% free-cash-flow yield at a cyclical peak can fall by half if prices roll over.
  • Check what changed in supply. Toshiba's plan and China's progress both add supply, which is how memory cycles turn.
  • Check dilution and quality flags. Western Digital shows 4 earnings-quality flags and SanDisk 2 on this site's earnings quality check.
  • Size positions for a 50% fall. These stocks just showed one is normal.

Memory stocks FAQ

Why did memory stocks fall in October 2026?

Reports point to Toshiba's plan to double hard-disk output, a Chinese memory maker's DRAM progress, worries about AI spending, and a sell-the-news reaction after a huge run. Sources disagree on which mattered most.

How much are SanDisk and Western Digital down from their highs?

On this site's weekly data, SanDisk is about 47% and Western Digital about 54% below their 52-week highs, despite one-year gains of 742% and 185%.

Is Micron still a buy after the drop?

This site gives no advice. Micron is up about 342% over the year and 28% off its high, and its price implies single-digit growth on trailing cash flow, which was earned at boom prices.

Why can cyclical stocks look cheap at the top?

Because trailing earnings and cash flow are at a peak. Ratios on peak numbers understate the risk if prices turn down.

When does Intel report next?

October 29, 2026, with consensus revenue near $16.52 billion according to previews.
