How it makes money

How Does Cboe Profit From Market Volatility?

Cboe is paid by volume, not by volatility itself: it earns a fee on each options contract traded, and it has the exclusive right to list S&P 500 index options (SPX) and VIX products. Those products earn about $0.95 per contract against about $0.06 for ordinary stock options, so growth in index options matters most.

  • In its second quarter of 2026 net revenue rose 25% to $731.6 million, options net revenue rose 30% and index options volume rose 32%.
  • Volatility raises volume, but the business also grew on retail trading, so it can earn in calm markets too.

Options are about 65% of net revenue. Cboe also sells data, reported as Data Vantage and not shown in that table, which grew about 15%. The adjusted operating margin was 70.4%, because an exchange's costs barely rise when volume does.

Why do index options matter so much?

Cboe options revenue per contract in the second quarter of 2026: index options 0.953 dollars, multi-listed options 0.064 dollarsIndex options (SPX, VIX)$0.953Multi-listed options$0.064

Cboe's revenue per contract in Q2 2026, from its results release. Total options revenue per contract was $0.317.

An ordinary stock option can be traded on many exchanges, so Cboe competes on price and keeps only a few cents. SPX options and VIX products can be traded only on Cboe's exchange, and the revenue is about 15 times higher per contract. Index options volume rose 32% to 6.2 million contracts a day, and Cboe's total options volume rose 26% to 21.9 million. Its share of all options trading was 30.0%.

Repeal of the pattern day trader rule boosted retail trading in SPX same-day options and the mini-SPX, with mini-SPX setting a monthly record of 241,000 contracts a day in August.

Does Cboe win when the VIX spikes?

The VIX measures expected volatility in the S&P 500, and Cboe created it. When markets are stressed, volume in index options and VIX products usually rises, and so does Cboe's revenue. But the 2026 growth came with a market that was not in crisis: a rise in retail trading grew volume. Calm markets with high participation can be as good for Cboe as turbulent ones, while a quiet, low-participation market can hurt.

An exchange has high margins and very little capital need, which is the kind of business the See's Candies test favours. At 26.2 times trailing earnings after a 43% year, much of that is priced in.
