Is Silver Undervalued? What the Data Says

There is no earnings test for silver, so whether it is undervalued depends on which yardstick you pick, and they disagree. Against its own history it is cheap: about $58 on October 20, 2026, less than half of the record above $121 set on January 29. Against gold it is in the middle of a wide range, with the gold-silver ratio at 71 after 107 in April 2025 and below 55 in December 2025. Against its cost of production it is well above, at roughly 4.8 times the average cost. The supply deficit is real but small. This is analysis, not a recommendation.

Can you value silver like a stock?

No. A company produces earnings and cash flow, so you can compare its price with them: a P/E, a free-cash-flow yield or a DCF. Silver pays nothing, so there is no earnings to divide by. This site's valuation tools therefore do not apply to the metal itself.

What you can do is compare today's price with four anchors: its own past, gold, what it costs to mine and the balance of supply and demand. Each is a rough guide and none is a fair-value number.

YardstickWhat it says nowIts limit
Own price historyAbout $58 against a record above $121 in January: 48% of the highA record is not a fair price, and the high came in a spike that fell 38% in one day
Gold-silver ratio71.1 ounces of silver per ounce of gold, between 107 (April 2025) and below 55 (December 2025)The ratio has no fixed correct level, and gold can move too
Cost of productionPrice about 4.8 times the average all-in sustaining cost of $12.21Most silver is a by-product of other metals, so cost does not set a floor
Supply and demandA deficit of 46.3 million ounces forecast for 2026, the sixth in a rowThe gap is about 4% of demand and has been met from existing stocks

Silver in dollars per ounce at four points. The 2025 average is 'just over $40' and December 2025 is about $84, both from Investing News; the January high is above $121 per Kitco and Investing News; October 20 is Kitco's futures close.

The path was a rise to a record on January 29, 2026, followed by a fast reversal. Investing News attributes the break to the nomination of a hawkish US Federal Reserve chair, which set off a rush to sell leveraged long positions and a one-day fall of 38%. In the week of October 20 to 24 sources put silver at about $54 to $58 depending on the contract and the hour. Kitco reported a futures close of $58.14 on October 20, with gold at $4,130.

What does the gold-silver ratio say?

Gold-silver ratio, ounces of silver per ounce of gold: April 2025 peak 107, December 2025 below 55, mid-October 2026 annual high near 74, October 20 2026 71.110306090120107Apr 2025 peak55Dec 2025 (below)74Mid-Oct 2026 high71.11Oct 20, 2026

The gold-silver ratio at four points: 107 at the April 2025 peak and below 55 in December 2025 (Investing News), an annual high near 74 in mid-October 2026 and 71.11 on October 20 (Kitco).

A high ratio means silver is cheap against gold, a low one means it is dear. At 71 silver is cheaper against gold than it was at the end of 2025, and far less cheap than at the April 2025 peak. Investors who use the ratio often pick a long-run average, but the choice of average decides the answer, so treat it as a gauge of mood rather than value.

What do supply and demand say?

The Silver Institute and Metals Focus publish the annual World Silver Survey. Its April 2026 edition, as reported by Investing News and Discovery Alert, shows a market that sells more than it mines:

Measure (million ounces)20252026 forecast
Total supply1,090.41,066.4
Mine production846.6844.1
Total demand1,130.61,112.6
Industrial demand657.4639.6
Deficit (demand minus supply)40.346.3

The 2026 deficit would be the sixth in a row, and its forecast was cut from 67 million ounces in February to 46.3 in April. Industrial demand is expected to fall 3%, with solar the weak spot: one report puts photovoltaic demand down about 19% to roughly 151 million ounces. Jewelry demand is forecast down 16%, while physical investment, meaning bars and coins, is forecast up 18%.

The numbers are a mixed signal. A deficit says supply is short, but demand is also shrinking in its largest use. Some sources quote far bigger deficits, so check the survey itself before relying on any one figure.

How do you invest in silver, and what are the risks?

RouteWhat you getThe catch
Physical bars and coinsThe metal itselfDealer premiums, storage and insurance, and no income
Silver ETFs and fundsPrice exposure through a listed fundFees and fund structure vary, so read what the fund holds
Mining companiesProfit from digging metal, with leverage to the priceCosts, mine problems and by-product metals, so silver is often a small share of revenue

On this site, Newmont (NEM) is the closest tracked miner. It is mainly a gold producer that also mines silver, so its price moves with gold more than silver. On October 23, 2026 it traded at $114.11 and 13.8 times earnings and passed 8 of 8 value filters.

The main risks are volatility, as the 38% one-day fall shows, a lack of income and a fading industrial story. Size any position so a deep drop would not change your plans, and read what is margin of safety in investing before leaning on any single yardstick.

Silver valuation FAQ

Is silver undervalued right now?

It depends on the yardstick. It is under half of its January record and above its production cost, and the gold-silver ratio of about 71 sits between recent extremes. None of these is a measure of fair value.

What is the gold-silver ratio?

It is the number of ounces of silver that equal one ounce of gold. Kitco put it at 71.11 on October 20, 2026, after an annual high near 74 the week before.

Is there a silver shortage?

The Silver Institute forecasts a deficit of 46.3 million ounces in 2026, the sixth year in a row, which is about 4% of demand. A deficit is not an empty market: it has been met from existing stocks.

Why did silver fall from $121?

Investing News links the fall to the nomination of a hawkish US Federal Reserve chair, which triggered selling of leveraged positions and a one-day drop of 38%.

Can you value silver with a DCF?

No. Silver produces no cash flow, so a DCF has nothing to discount. Miners can be valued on earnings, but their prices also depend on costs and other metals.
