Is Fiserv a Buy After Falling About 60%?
Fiserv is cheap enough to price in a lot of bad news, but not yet proven to have stopped producing it. At $49.86 the stock is 61% below its high and trades near 7 times its cut 2026 adjusted EPS guidance of $7.20 to $7.40, with a free cash flow yield of 15%.
- Against that, revenue fell 5% organically in the second quarter, adjusted EPS fell 26%, the second-half growth outlook was cut from 6% to 8% to about 2%, and a new CEO is rebuilding the plan.
- The bet is that Q2 was the low point, as management says.

Why has Fiserv stock crashed?
How far Fiserv trades below its 52-week high in this site's weekly data. The stock is also down 60% over a year, with two separate guidance shocks.
| When | What happened | Reported effect |
|---|---|---|
| October 2025 | Third-quarter miss (EPS $2.04 against $2.64 expected) and a deep cut to the growth outlook | Shares fell almost 41% in a day, the biggest fall on record, to about $74 |
| June 15, 2026 | Company reaffirmed its second-half outlook | Raised hopes of a steadier second half |
| August 5 to 6, 2026 | Q2 miss: revenue down 5% organically, adjusted EPS $1.84 against $1.91 expected; 2026 guidance cut again | Shares fell 8% to 11% to near $48, close to the 52-week low of $47.04 |
| Mid-2026 | New CEO Takis Georgakopoulos, a former JPMorgan payments executive, takes over | A reset, with Clover at the centre of the technology plan |
Mike Lyons, who ran the company in 2025, is not mentioned in the August coverage this post read, so the date of the CEO change is not confirmed here. The first shock was about expectations and Argentina, and the second about growth slowing into the second half.
What did Fiserv report for the second quarter of 2026?
| Measure | Q2 2026 | Compared with |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $4.96 billion, down 4% adjusted and 5% organically | Merchant Solutions down 1%, Financial Solutions down 8% |
| Adjusted EPS | $1.84 | Down 26%, and $0.07 below the $1.91 expected |
| Adjusted operating margin | 31.8% | 39.6% a year earlier |
| Net income / GAAP EPS | $630 million / $1.17 | From $1.03 billion, down 37% |
| Recurring revenue | Up 2%, 84% of adjusted revenue | Steady but slow |
| Clover | Revenue up 2% reported, 11% to 13% excluding one-offs and attrition | Payment volume up 9% |
| Free cash flow | About $1.1 billion | 112% conversion; first half $1.36 billion against $1.54 billion |
Adjusted operating margin by segment, Q2 2025 against Q2 2026. Both segments lost 5 to 10 points.
What exactly went wrong?
| Factor | Impact on second-half growth | Is it temporary? |
|---|---|---|
| Delayed contracted revenue and slower enterprise ramps | About 2 points | Probably, if contracts start as scheduled |
| Lower hardware and product revenue | About 1 point | Cyclical |
| Argentina | About 1 point | Depends on that country's economy |
| Divestitures (student loan servicing and ATM businesses) | About 1 point | Permanent, but deliberate |
| Extra technology, infrastructure and cybersecurity spending | More than $100 million in the second half | A choice management says it needs to make |
Management now guides second-half adjusted revenue growth to about 2%, down from 6% to 8%, with Q3 organic growth down in the low single digits and Q4 up about mid-single digits. It called Q2 the low point of the year, but it had also reaffirmed the old outlook on June 15, which is why trust is the issue.
Is Fiserv cheap at this price?
| Measure | Fiserv (FISV) | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Price / market value | $49.86 / $26.3 billion | 61% below its 52-week high |
| P/E on 2026 adjusted EPS guidance | 6.7 to 6.9 | Guidance is $7.20 to $7.40 |
| Trailing / forward P/E (data) | 9.4 / 5.9 | Trailing is GAAP-based, so the two differ |
| Free cash flow yield | 14.9% | Operating cash flow less capital spending, trailing |
| Price to book / price to sales | 0.98 / 1.26 | Below the book value of its assets |
| Debt | Under 3.2 times adjusted EBITDA, about 3 times by year end (company) | Q2 debt actions per the call summary: a $1.4 billion tender offer, a $1.2 billion open-market repurchase and a $1 billion euro bond |
| Short interest | 5.8% of float, 4.2 days to cover | Mild |
| Wall Street view | Hold, 3.36 of 5 | Of 44 analysts, 4 strong buy, 10 buy |
| Earnings quality | All 5 checks clean | Profit converts to cash |
On guidance the stock trades near 7 to 7 times earnings, which is about what a business growing at a few percent a year would fetch in a poor market, not a collapse multiple. This site shows no DCF for it because payment processors are classed as financial services. The Fiserv stock page has the filters and the checks. Fiserv has bought back about $9 billion of shares over 15 years, equal to 34% of today's market value, yet its share count is only 5% lower, which what 15 years of buybacks really did explains.
What are the bull and bear cases?
| The bull case | The bear case |
|---|---|
| Q2 was the low point, with growth returning to mid-single digits in Q4 | Management reaffirmed the old outlook in June and then cut it, so another miss is possible |
| Clover is growing 11% to 13% on an adjusted basis with payment volume up 9% | Reported Clover growth was only 2%, and the medium-term target of 15% to 20% growth is far away |
| A new CEO and a portfolio review can remove weak businesses and simplify the company | More divestitures shrink revenue, and the plan includes more than $100 million of extra spending |
| Free cash flow of about 112% of profit and falling leverage give room for repurchases | Margins fell 5 to 10 points and annual gains of about 0.5 points from 2027 are only a target |
| A low multiple already assumes little recovery | Two growth shocks in a year have broken trust, so a third miss would be punished |
Management's medium-term targets, as summarised from the call, include about 50 basis points of annual margin expansion from 2027, savings of at least $500 million from its Elevate programme, and double-digit adjusted EPS growth for 2027 to 2029. Those were given as targets, and none is guaranteed.
What should you watch next?
| Watch | What it would show |
|---|---|
| Third-quarter results (check Fiserv's investor page for the date) | Whether organic revenue is down only low single digits as guided |
| Fourth-quarter growth, guided up mid-single digits | Whether the second-half recovery is real |
| Clover revenue and volume growth | Whether the growth engine is intact |
| Financial Solutions margin and client losses | The segment that lost 8% of revenue and 10 points of margin |
| More divestitures and the progress of cost savings | Whether the portfolio review improves the mix |
