Which Sectors Lead Before a Recession?
It depends, and the record shows no sector that reliably leads before a recession. Consumer staples fell least in three of four downturns here, but the hardest-hit sector was different each time: chips, financials, then energy.
This post uses this site's Sector Map data on four US downturns and two outside sources, and says where the evidence stops.
What does the Sector Map actually measure?
The Sector Map groups about 500 large US stocks into twelve sectors and compares each with the market on six valuation lenses today. It also replays four crashes sector by sector: the median stock in each sector, measured from the S&P 500's peak week. See how the Sector Map works.
Two limits matter here. The crash results use only companies that survive today, so losses are understated, most of all in 2000 to 2002. And they start at the market's peak, so they show who fell most during a downturn, not who moved first before one.
Does the stock market peak before a recession starts?
Usually before, and sometimes by a long way. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER, page last updated March 14, 2023) dates US recessions after the fact. Set against the market peaks in this site's data:
| Downturn | S&P 500 peak week | NBER recession starts | S&P 500 at its bottom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dot-com bust | Mar 2000 | Mar 2001 | -47.4% (Oct 2002) |
| 2008 crisis | Oct 2007 | Dec 2007 | -55.9% (Mar 2009) |
| COVID crash | Feb 2020 | Feb 2020 | -32.2% (Mar 2020) |
| 2022 bear market | Jan 2022 | none listed | -24.7% (Oct 2022) |
The market peaked 12 months, 2 months and 0 months ahead of the recession start, and the 2022 bear market had no recession on NBER's list. So “before a recession” is mostly the market's own peak, and a sector can only lead from there.
Which sectors fell least in past downturns?
Median stock change in each sector from the S&P 500's peak to its bottom week (data built October 25, 2026, survivors only):
| Sector | Dot-com | 2008 | COVID | 2022 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer staples | +37.8% | -34.4% | -26.0% | -10.9% |
| Health care | -2.0% | -41.0% | -26.0% | -21.5% |
| Utilities | +3.1% | -43.9% | -33.6% | -12.8% |
| Technology | -64.0% | -53.2% | -29.1% | -33.0% |
| Semiconductors | -80.3% | -58.4% | -36.9% | -39.9% |
| Financials | +0.9% | -66.3% | -39.7% | -18.7% |
| Energy | +3.7% | -58.7% | -54.4% | +40.8% |
Staples was among the three least-hit sectors in every episode (the least hit in 2000 to 2002 and 2008, tied with health care in COVID, second to energy in 2022). Health care was middling in 2000 to 2002 and 2022. And the worst sector changed: semiconductors in 2000 to 2002 and 2022, financials in 2008, energy in COVID. Energy swung from second worst in 2008 to the only gainer in 2022.
Median stock change from the S&P 500 peak week to its bottom week, percent. Survivors only.
What does outside research say about defensive and cyclical sectors?
It is mixed. A Robeco study of US stocks from January 1929 to May 2023 (published July 5, 2023) found defensive stocks did better than cyclical ones over the full sample and with lower volatility. But the lead is not consistent: each group leads roughly half the time, and the shifts can last three to ten years. That study is not about recessions specifically, and it comes from an asset manager.
Both sources point the same way as the table. Defensives cushion a fall, no sector tells you in advance which downturn is coming, and the label “defensive” is only as good as the sector's actual earnings. Here utilities, the textbook defensive, were middling.
So what can you use before a recession?
Not a sector, but warning gauges: the Crash Indicator reads valuation, credit and the yield curve, and two posts explain signals that have preceded past recessions: the Sahm rule and the inverted yield curve. Rates also shape how stocks react; see how interest rates affect stock prices. None is a timing tool.
Recession sectors FAQ
Which sectors are defensive?
Consumer staples, health care and utilities are the usual list, because people keep buying food, medicine and power. In this site's four downturns staples held up best, health care did well in two and utilities landed in the middle.
Does the stock market fall before a recession starts?
In two of three recessions since 2000 it peaked first. The S&P 500 peaked in March 2000 (recession began March 2001) and October 2007 (recession began December 2007), and in February 2020, the same month as the recession.
Do cyclical sectors fall first?
This site's data starts at the market peak, so it cannot show who falls first. From the peak, the median semiconductor stock fell most in 2000 to 2002 and 2022, financials fell most in 2008 and energy fell most in 2020.
Can you time sector rotation around recessions?
The evidence here does not support it. Recessions are dated by NBER months after they begin, the hardest-hit sector changed every time and a 1929 to 2023 study found defensive and cyclical stocks each lead about half the time.
What does the Sector Map show?
How stretched each of twelve sectors is on six valuation lenses today, plus how each sector's median stock fared in four past crashes. It is a snapshot of about 500 large US stocks, not a recession forecast.
