What Drives the Dollar vs Euro Exchange Rate?
The dollar vs euro exchange rate is driven by five things: the gap between the two central banks' interest rates, inflation and real rates, how fast each side creates money, relative growth, and risk sentiment. No single one of them predicts the rate.
As of October 23, 2026 one euro costs $1.12, down 4.1% over one year and 3.7% over five. This guide takes each driver in turn with the live figures behind the dollar vs euro page.
How do interest rates move the dollar vs euro rate?
Money tends to go where it earns more, so a higher policy rate can pull a currency up. As of late October 2026 the Federal Reserve's rate is 3.88% and the European Central Bank's deposit rate is 2.50%, a gap of 1.38 percentage points in the dollar's favour. Both banks raised their rates by 0.25 points in September 2026.
The 10-year bond tells the same story. The US Treasury yielded 4.99% and Germany's 10-year Bund (the euro area's benchmark) 3.47% in September 2026, a gap of 1.52 points.
The data is less tidy than the theory. Across 39 non-overlapping three-month windows, the change in the policy-rate gap had a correlation of -0.06 with the change in the euro's price in dollars, and the change in the 10-year gap had +0.23. That is weak either way. Markets price in expected rate moves long before they happen, so the change on the day often matters more than the level.
Why do inflation and real rates matter for the exchange rate?
A currency that loses buying power faster tends to lose value against one that keeps it, and a rate only pays you what is left after inflation. The simple real policy rate is the nominal rate minus inflation (see what a real interest rate is).
| Measure | US | Euro area |
|---|---|---|
| Policy rate (Oct 22 to 25, 2026) | 3.88% | 2.50% |
| Inflation (Sep 2026) | 3.72% | 3.8% |
| Real policy rate | +0.16 | -1.30 |
| Real effective exchange rate (Sep 2026) | 107.1 | 103.3 |
The dollar's rate gap is wider in real terms: +0.16 against -1.30, a swing of 1.46 points. The euro's real effective rate (BIS) sits 3.3% above its own ten-year average and the dollar's 4.8% above, so neither is far from normal on that measure.
Policy rate minus latest inflation, the simple version. The euro area pays below inflation; the US pays about equal to it.
Does money supply growth change the exchange rate?
In theory, more money chasing the same goods weakens a currency. In practice the effect shows up slowly and through inflation, which the table above already counts. US M2 grew 5.26% over the year to August 2026; euro-area M3 grew 3.87%.
The two central banks also disclose different things: the Fed stopped publishing M3 in 2006, while the ECB still does, so the dollar vs euro page shows each as published without a combined score.
What about growth and risk sentiment?
Faster growth attracts investment and can lift a currency. When investors fear a crisis they often buy dollars, so a dollar can rise on bad news elsewhere. Neither driver is measured on the dollar vs euro page, so this post gives no number for them, and a driver with no figure is the one hardest to test.
Risk mood shows up elsewhere on this site: when credit spreads widen and stocks fall, the Crash Indicator moves too. For the other safe haven that responds to the dollar, see why gold rises when the dollar falls.
Which driver predicts the dollar vs euro rate best?
None. The euro's price in dollars has ranged from 0.97 (September 23, 2022) to 1.19 (January 30, 2026) in five years, a 22% swing, and each driver above changed direction several times inside it. The rate gap, the most popular explanation, has a near-zero relation to three-month moves.
A better use of the drivers is as a checklist of what is pulling on a currency at any moment. The same layout is on every pair page, such as euro vs pound and euro vs yen, and all the currency comparisons sit on one index. Data as of October 23, 2026 for the rate, September 2026 for yields and inflation (FRED, ECB, BIS).
Dollar vs euro FAQ
Does a higher interest rate make a currency stronger?
Often in theory, but the data is weak. Over 39 non-overlapping three-month windows, the change in the gap between the Fed and the ECB policy rates had a correlation of -0.06 with the change in the euro's price in dollars.
What is the real effective exchange rate?
An index from the Bank for International Settlements that tracks a currency against a basket of trading partners, adjusted for relative inflation. As of September 2026 it reads 107.1 for the dollar and 103.3 for the euro.
Does printing more money weaken a currency?
Faster money growth can add to inflation and weigh on a currency over long periods, but the link is loose over months. US M2 grew 5.26% over the year to August 2026 and euro-area M3 grew 3.87%.
Why do investors watch EUR/USD?
It is a major currency pair and it changes what overseas sales and assets are worth in dollars. A US company that sells in euros reports fewer dollars when the euro weakens.
Can you predict where EUR/USD goes next?
Not from any single driver on this page. The euro's price in dollars moved between 0.97 and 1.19 over five years while the drivers changed direction several times.
