Is CenterPoint a Safe Utility for Dividends?
CenterPoint's dividend looks reasonably safe on the numbers, with risks that are specific to Texas. It pays $0.24 a quarter ($0.96 a year), about half of its 2026 non-GAAP earnings guidance of $1.89 to $1.91, and earnings are guided to grow about 8%, helped by demand in Greater Houston (12.2 gigawatts of firmly committed industrial load and 8 gigawatts of data centers expected by 2029).
- The yield is only about 2.2%, so it is a growth utility more than an income one, and it carries debt to equity of 2.1.
- Third-quarter results are due on October 27.

How well is the dividend covered?
| Measure | Figure | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Quarterly dividend | $0.24 (payable December 10, 2026) | $0.96 a year |
| 2026 non-GAAP EPS guidance | At least the midpoint of $1.89 to $1.91 | About 8% above the $1.76 reported for 2025 |
| Payout on guided earnings | About 50% ($0.96 of $1.91) | Leaves half of earnings to fund investment |
| Trailing payout ratio on this site | 53% | Based on trailing GAAP earnings |
| Trailing dividend yield | 2.18% | Low for a utility |
| Consensus EPS | $1.91 for 2026 and $2.08 for 2027 | About 8.9% growth in 2027 |
Trailing dividend yields from this site's weekly data of October 23, 2026. CenterPoint pays less than most utilities because it retains more to build the grid.
A payout near half of earnings is lower than many utilities pay, which gives room to keep raising the dividend even if costs rise. The trade-off is a yield of about 2.2%.
Where does the growth come from?
CenterPoint's regulated Houston electric business earns a return on the equipment it builds, so more investment means more earnings if regulators allow the costs. Demand is large: it reports clear line of sight to 12.2 gigawatts of firmly committed industrial load at Houston Electric and expects 8 gigawatts of data center projects to be energised in Greater Houston by 2029, with 3.5 gigawatts already under construction. It also says that growing load could save customers about $4 billion over a decade by spreading fixed costs, a claim of its own. In September a $50 million federal award to modernise the Houston-area grid was announced.
It is also selling its Ohio natural gas business, having completed the sale of its Louisiana and Mississippi gas business in 2025, which narrows the company to electric and Texas-focused gas.
What are the risks to the dividend?
| Risk | What is known |
|---|---|
| Texas weather | The filings list severe weather, wildfires and the February 2021 winter storm in legal proceedings, and Hurricane Beryl is also cited in proceedings and risks |
| Regulation | Recovery of resiliency spending depends on regulators, and the sources read gave no figure for the plan or for penalties |
| Debt and equity needs | Debt to equity is 2.1, and the company lists equity and debt issuance, forward sales and securitisation among its plans |
| Financing costs | Higher interest rates raise financing costs, which analysts expect could offset part of the growth |
| Thin free cash flow | Free cash flow per share is only $0.90, because most cash goes into building the grid |
Free cash flow does not cover the dividend, which is normal for a utility that is growing fast: it funds the dividend from operating cash flow and capital markets. That is why the payout against earnings, and access to cheap debt, matter more than free cash flow here. How to find safe high-dividend stocks and how to calculate the dividend payout ratio explain those tests.
